No Such Thing

2001

A whimsical, wandering tale carried along by a great soundtrack. The narrative arc is so strange, with extended non-sequitur detours. I'm sure this is offputting to some, but it really kept me intrigued. Sarah Polley is aloof and somewhat loveable, which fits the mood of the film nicely. Helen Mirren steals all her scenes as Polley's media executive boss, and Robert John Burke delivers a wonderfully dry potrayal of a depressed, alcoholic demon. This is a strange tale, which gets more than a little ridiculous and self-indulgent, but I like it.
