I can't believe this movie got made. It's basically a barbarian road movie based around a series of encounters with rival tribes, a la The Warriors. But it predates spoken language, so there is only grunting and screeching for 100 minutes. What's perhaps most bizarre about the experience is that you can tell it was made by people who really cared about it. It's technically very well constructed, with solid cinematography and costumes. It wasn't shot on a sound stage, and the locations change scene to scene. Such effort for something that clearly will never have mass appeal, nor educational utility as I'm sure the tribes featured are not accurate to a given time and place. Ultimately, it was a bit of a slog to get through, but I came away with a lot of respect for this labor of love.
Hilariously, Ron Perlman co-stars, and barely wears any makeup compared to the rest of the cast.
